Rochester, MN(KROC AM News) - One of those taking part in last weekend’s Polar Plunge in Rochester had a special reason for braving the cold weather and water.

He has been jumping for the last 12 years for his son, who was born with Down Syndrome and a heart defect.

Despite the pandemic, Randy Vath of Zumbrota was able to raise nearly $6600, the 2nd highest total of this year’s “plungers.”

His coworkers at Zumbrota Drivetrain rallied around him and chipped in $800, which was matched by the company for a total donation of $1,500. Randy’s total career jumps are at 110 after last Saturday’s jump, with individual totals raised over the 12 years exceeding $60,000. The past four years, Randy has been participating as a “Super Plunger,” meaning he jumps 24 times in 24 hours. His son Logan is now 14-years-old.

“Plunging has opened up a whole new window of friends and opportunities to share our story,” Randy shares.

“Randy is such an inspiration to the rest of the staff here, and is an example of the community spirit that the team here at Zumbrota Drivetrain exhibit. What he does to support his son is the same commitment that he provides to each project he undertakes here.” Said Kevin Shakeshaft, General Manager at Zumbrota Drivetrain.

Proceeds from the annual Polar Plunge benefit Minnesota Special Olympics. The Rochester event raised nearly $170,000 this year.
