Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - Yup - another expensive online scam has been reported in the Rochester area.

A rural Olmsted County man contacted the sheriff’s office Thursday to report he had been scammed out of thousands of dollars.

Capt. Scott Behrns says the man noticed a popup message on his computer on Tuesday that indicated it was “infected. “

The 42-year-old man was instructed to contact a person and was told his computer would be “unlocked and cleaned up” if he paid for the service. He was told to purchase gift cards from several local retail stores. He then gave the card numbers to the person he had talked to earlier.

Behrns says the man spent $11,000 on the cards.

He eventually became suspicious and reported the scam.

Behrns says the man is now working with his credit card company to see if it will forgive the charges.
