Rochester's National Night Out isn't happening as planned in August, but it isn't canceled, either-- it's just been postponed until October.

National Night Out (NNO) is an annual event designed to help foster the relationship between neighborhoods and the law enforcement agencies that serve them. The very first National Night Out happened in August of 1984. According to the National Night Out site, the first annual National Night Out involved "2.5 million neighbors across 400 communities in 23 states," the site said.

And, the 2020 event was originally planned for Tuesday, August 4th. But, due to the continuing coronavirus outbreak, it's been postponed this year until Tuesday, October 6th. Locally, in and around Rochester, NNO events are coordinated by both the Olmsted County Sheriff's Office and the Rochester Police Department. A post on the Olmsted County website explains more:

Due to COVID-19, the Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office is following recommendations from the National level and postponing the annual National Night Out community-building celebration to this fall, Tuesday, October 6. National Night Out normally takes place on the first Tuesday in August each year. The Olmsted County Sheriff's Office is pleased to announce another year of participation in National Night Out on Oct.6, 2020! The annual event is in its 37th year of existence and takes place in thousands of communities from all fifty states, including Olmsted County.

Last year, for the first time ever, my neighborhood in northwest Rochester hosted its first NNO event. I went and had a great time getting to know the other families who live near us. So, mark those calendars for October 6th! (At least it won't be as hot and humid then, right?)
