How do you know that the 4th of July is getting close?  People are shooting off fireworks in neighborhoods all over Rochester.

Illegal or not, they are happening, and the Rochester Police Department is getting quite a few phone calls about the big sounds in our town.  Because of the number of calls they've been receiving, they issued the following statement on their Facebook page:

The Rochester Police Department will handle calls of illegal fireworks, as we do all other calls for other low level violations.  Calls for service will be created and information will be given to patrol officers.

When time permits, we will respond to educate, encourage compliance, and then enforce local ordinances.  Based on staffing and predicted call load for the 4th of July week, we will not be able to respond to every call.  The non-emergency Police department phone number is 507-328-6800.

We believe that, with the cancelation of many organized events, there will be an increase in community members using fireworks in neighborhoods.  As fireworks can cause stress to those who experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and pets, we encourage community members to consider their neighbors when using fireworks.

We hope everyone has a safe 4th of July week and ask that community members continue to follow the CDC guidelines for COVID-19.
