Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - After being closed for almost a month, Rochester's newest downtown parking ramp has been reopened to the public.

Ramp 6 next to the new Hilton Hotel was closed with very little notice on June 10th for unspecified construction work. A news release issued by the city Tuesday afternoon indicates the parking structure has been inspected and is “safe and secure for ongoing parking activities.”

The reason for the construction work and the nature of it has not been disclosed to the public. An earlier news release announcing the closure only said the shutdown was needed to complete work within the ramp and that it would remain closed until the work was completed. When asked for more information, a city spokesperson declined to comment due to pending litigation.

The litigation involves a lawsuit filed by the city against the Collaborative Design Group, which was contracted to design the parking structure so it could support a residential development up to 10 stories on top of it. The developer selected for a $38 million housing project put it on hold several months after the ramp first opened in 2019 and informed the city the ramp did not have sufficient structural and footing support.

The city’s lawsuit against the design firm is currently scheduled for a trial in August of next year.
