Rochester City Council to Consider $22,000,000 Proposal

Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) – The Rochester City Council may make a major decision Monday concerning the future of the site that currently serves as the police department’s north station.

RPD first proposed a major renovation and expansion of the building in early 2018.

The proposal was put on hold as the city pursued plans to set up its own planning and development department and began looking at the RPD site to house the new agency. The new department was eventually approved and now the city needs to decide where it will be located.

Staff will present two proposals to the council at its Monday meeting.

One calls for a renovation of the current building to house the planning and development department at an estimated cost of $7-million. The second proposal calls for the construction of a new building at the site for the police department at an estimated cost of $15-million.

Staff estimates the combined projects would require annual property tax levy payments of $1.5-million over a 20-year period.
