It has been a hot, dry summer. There is some relief in sight with temps only expected to be in the 80s by late week, but before then we’re going to have to deal with dangerous heat. Olmsted County is urging residents to prepare for extreme heat on Wednesday when the high temp is expected to be in the mid-90s with heat index readings or "feels like" temps easily soaring into the triple digits.

Public Health Officials say, “Anyone can be overcome by extreme heat, but some people are at higher risk than others. They include the elderly, the very young, and people with mental illness and chronic diseases. Signs of heat-related illness vary but can include heavy sweating, paleness, muscle cramps, tiredness, weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea or vomiting, and fainting. Heat exhaustion can lead to heatstroke, which can cause death or permanent disability unless treated immediately.” Make sure to check on your elderly family members, friends, and neighbors!

Olmsted County Public Health officials sent a press release to remind residents to take simple precautions to keep their family and pets safe during the heatwave. Officials say hydration is important for your health so make sure to drink plenty of water and also encourage residents to use their air-conditioning. The press release says, “If you have an air-conditioning unit, use it. If you do not, seek air-conditioned buildings during the heat of the day, such as public libraries and community centers, malls and movie theaters.”

Olmsted County Public Health’s Quick Tips For Dealing With The Heatwave:

Do:

  • Use air conditioning or spend time in air-conditioned locations
  • Take a cool bath or shower
  • Minimize direct exposure to the sun
  • Limit your time outdoors as much as possible; take frequent breaks if you must be outside
  • Stay hydrated – drink water or nonalcoholic fluids
  • Wear loose-fitting, light-colored clothes
  • Check on your neighbors, friends, and family members – especially those who are older and /or with health issues

Don’t:

  • Leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle, even with the windows rolled down, even for a few minutes
