St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News) - A huge increase in the number of tests reported completed on Thursday produced a new daily record for the number of new COVID-19 infections reported in Minnesota today.

The Minnesota Department of Health today reported 2287 new confirmed cases of the viral infection based on the results of the approximately 43,600 COVID-19 tests that were reported completed on Thursday. 68 of the new cases reported today were in Olmsted County. It marked the first time the daily count of new cases has exceeded 2000. The testing total was, by far, a new record, as was the number of cases reported in Olmsted County.

The testing positivity rate remained around five-percent statewide which indicates the surge in confirmed cases was directly the result of the matching surge in testing.

The State Health Department also reported there were 13 additional coronavirus related deaths throughout Minnesota. One involved a person in their late 60s who lived in Mower County.
