Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - Another twist caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

For the first time ever, a Rochester election featured more absentee ballots than in-person voting.

Preliminary figures show more than twice as many voters submitted an absentee ballot than those who voted in person Tuesday. As of Thursday morning, 13,137 absentee ballots from Rochester voters had been processed. That compares to 5600 who made a trip to their precinct Tuesday to cast a ballot. The overall Olmsted County total of 16,100 absentee ballots was also a record.

Canvassing for Olmsted County and Rochester will take place Friday and the final results will then be certified.

Because of the pandemic, the state permitted mailed ballots that were postmarked by Election Day to be accepted until 5 p.m. Thursday, which means there could be some changes to the final results that were released Tuesday.
