We just got done shoveling from what Old Man Winter dropped on us over the weekend and now even more white stuff could be on the way.

Seeing as it IS January, and it IS Minnesota, I guess we shouldn't be too surprised that there could be more snow in our forecast, right? And after not having much snow at all late in 2020 (the Rochester area actually got more snow last fall in OCTOBER than we did in December) it looks like you might want to keep that shovel handy this week.

While most of our neck of the woods in southeast Minnesota saw between 3 and 5 inches of white, fluffy snow Saturday into Sunday (we had 3 inches at our place in northwest Rochester), I was checking the forecast for this week can saw something that caught my eye.

Checking the 10-day forecast from The Weather Channel's weather.com, there's not too much happening until next weekend, when the forecast for Saturday, January 30th says they're 'watching a potential winter storm' that could give us some mixed precipitation and possibly 2 to 3 inches of snow.

That same forecast is corroborated by the weather crew over at KTTC-TV, where though it sounds like they're less positive we'll see multiple inches of snow, noting "A storm system from the southwest will move into the region for the weekend, bringing a chance for a wintry mix and perhaps a little snow."

However, when you look at the extended forecast into next week, the first week of February, things appear to get more interesting. Weather.com says we could see 1 to 3 inches of snow on Wednesday night, February 3rd. Then, Thursday night, February 4th, it says we could get 5 to 8 inches of the white stuff!

Now, as several meteorologists I've worked with over the years have said, accurately forecasting anything that far ahead is pretty tough to do, so don't put too much into that forecast just yet. In fact, the National Weather Service's Forecast Discussion page doesn't speculate on our forecast much past this weekend (where, again, they say we could pick up a few inches of snow Saturday.)

But, you never know. Selfishly, I'm hoping for more snow. I wouldn't even mind it if we got a big 'ol blizzard, like the one that hit our area in early February 2019 and dumped over a foot of snow on us. I figure, as long as it's winter, we might as well have enough snow so we can get out and ski, snowshoe, snowmobile or just enjoy the scenery, right? Speaking of big snowstorms, though, keep scrolling to check out some cool pictures of winters past here in Minnesota!
