Stillwater, MN (KROC-AM News) - Members of a former Rochester National Guard unit are preparing to depart this weekend for a year-long overseas deployment.

The National Guard says a unit deployment ceremony will take place Sunday afternoon for about 150 members of the 34th Military Police Company, which is now headquartered in Stillwater. The soldiers are being sent to the U.S. Naval Station at Guantanamo Bay Cuba to provide base security. Because of the pandemic, family members, and other members of the public are being asked to view live streaming of the event on Facebook starting at 1 PM.

“Our Soldiers are trained and motivated for this important mission,” said Capt. Troy Davidson, the company commander. “We’ve worked hard over the last few years to make sure this unit is one of the most ready units in the U.S. Army.”

The unit will initially travel to Fort Bliss in Texas for additional training before being sent to Guantanamo Bay.
