Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) – A Rochester man has pleaded guilty to stealing money from Mayo Clinic while working there as a supervisor.

Pleading guilty Friday to three felony charges was 47-year-old Timothy Stafford. He was charged in February with 15 felony counts.

The criminal complaint charged him with stealing over $170,000 while working as Mayo’s Parking and Transportation Supervisor. Stafford was accused of diverting deposits of money from Mayo operations for his personal use between September 2015 and March 2016.

County Attorney Mark Ostrem commented, “This is a particularly egregious theft. Not only is it a gross amount of cash, Mr. Stafford used his position of authority and the trust placed in him by his employer to take advantage. It appears that Mr. Stafford used his position to alter procedures and create an environment ripe for his actions.”

The initial investigation was conducted by the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Minnesota before it was turned over to the Rochester Police Department late last year. The investigative reports were presented to the Olmsted County Attorney’s Office for review in December.

Stafford is scheduled to be sentenced in November.
