Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - A former Mayo Clinic employee is facing multiple felony charges for allegedly stealing over $170,000 from his employer.

Olmsted County Attorney Mark Ostrem today announced the filing of 5 counts each of theft by swindle and diversion of corporate property against Timothy Stafford. All of the charges are felonies.

He is the former Parking and Transportation Supervisor for the Mayo Clinic and is accused of diverting deposits of money from Mayo operations for his personal use between September 2015 and March 2016.

County Attorney Mark Ostrem commented, “This is a particularly egregious theft. Not only is it a gross amount of cash, Mr. Stafford used his position of authority and the trust placed in him by his employer to take advantage. It appears that Mr. Stafford used his position to alter procedures and create an environment ripe for his actions.”

The initial investigation was conducted by the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Minnesota before it was turned over to the Rochester Police Department late last year. The investigative reports were presented to the Olmsted County Attorney’s Office for review in December.

A date for Stafford’s formal arraignment on the charges has not been scheduled.
