CWD has struck again in Southeast Minnesota, and the public is able to get more details about the response that the DNR is going to have at a public meeting set in Preston.

The meeting will be held at the Fillmore Central School on Tuesday, December 18th at 7 pm, here the public hear the explanation of the CWD response efforts for this winter, including late-season specials hunts that are scheduled for this year. They will also learn about landowner shooting permits and targeted culling.

“DNR’s actions are designed to limit disease spread and keep Minnesota’s deer populations healthy,” said Lou Cornicelli, wildlife research manager. “We’re having this meeting so people can hear face-to-face about what’s going on and ask their own questions.”

The DNR staff will also discuss potential actions for the future, which includes a snow-dependent aerial deer survey and expansion of the disease management zone that now features a 10-mile radius around the city of Preston.

To date, 30 cases of CWD have been detected in wild deer in Southeast Minnesota, and the DNR discovered 12 new cases this fall in or near the disease management zone in Fillmore County. This does not include the one case found in a wild deer harvested in Houston County, which was about 30 miles from the disease management zone.
