Red Wing, MN (KROC AM News) -  A late night house fire in the Red Wing area forced firefighters to battle the elements as well as the blaze.

The Red Wing Fire Dept was called out at 11:30 PM Saturday to the nearby town of Wacouta. Crews arrived to find flames coming from the roof of the 3 story residence. All the occupants were able to safely escape.

Red Wing Fire Chief Mike Warner says the crews “encountered significant difficulties extinguishing the fire due to the extreme outside air temperature of -17 degrees as well as a lack of fire hydrants in the area.”

He says it took more than two hours to bring the fire under control. Warner says two firefighters received minor injuries. He says the fire caused extensive damage to the home.  The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Warner says crews from Goodhue, Lake City, Ellsworth, Miesville, Cannon Falls, Zumbrota, and Ellsworth Ambulance assisted his department in dealing with the fire and by providing station coverage.
