St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News) - Minnesota's expanding COVID-19 testing program has hit a milestone.

The Minnesota Department of Health has now reported the results of over 2.5 million tests for the viral infection since the start of the pandemic. All but about 20,000 of the tests were the PCR variety involving samples from nasal swabs.

The state today reported the results of the over 30,000 tests that were completed on Saturday. Those tests confirmed 1715 new COVID-19 cases among Minnesotans, including 24 new cases in Olmsted County. The statewide positivity rate was about 5.7-percent.

The health department also reported 17 additional coronavirus related deaths. The list of those who died after contracting the new illness included a resident of Mower County between 95 and 99 years old.
