Faribault, MN (KROC-AM News) - Two State Troopers are credited with saving the life of a Faribault man after he fell through thin ice on Cannon Lake Thursday evening.

A news release says the State Patrol was alerted shortly after 6 PM that a man had gone through the ice near I-35. Derek Swanhorst was the first to arrive and spotted 28-year-old Brandon Wilmes treading water about 60 feet from a bridge. While encouraging the man to make his way toward the edge of the ice, Trooper Swanhorst grabbed a dead tree and used it to help Wilmes get closer to the edge.

The next trooper to arrive, Doug Rauenhorst put on a life jacket and then crawled out on the ice to the man. After he grabbed ahold of Wilmes, Trooper Swanhorst held on to the other trooper’s feet until Faribault Police Officer Christopher Tonjum and Rice County Deputy Justin Hunt arrived and helped the troopers pull Wilmes out of the frigid water.

Wilmes was airlifted to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale to be treated for hypothermia. Information on his medical condition is not yet available.
