Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) – Over 150 wounded military veterans and supporters completed the first leg of a 500 mile ride when they arrived in Rochester this afternoon.

The bicyclists left Minneapolis in the morning, headed for Chicago to raise money for veterans and other first responders with PTSD and other injuries as participants in the 2017 UnitedHealthcare Great Lakes Challenge. The second leg of their journey will run just over 70 miles to La Crosse on Tuesday.

The event is collaboration between the health insurer and Project Hero, which is a national non-profit group that assists veterans and first responders in their recoveries from a variety of debilitating injuries.

The bikers are using hand cycles, recumbent cycles, adaptive bikes, custom tandems and traditional road bikes as they ride through historical locations, civic centers and various road attractions.

An event promoting the trek is planned tomorrow morning at the Peace Plaza in downtown Rochester. Mayor Ardell Brede and Mayo Clinic Medical Director of Public Affairs, Dr. John Wald, will be among the speakers.
