Scumbags on the Internet seem to really be playing to one's fear and embarrassment, because "adult content" scams are going around these days. Not only do some scammers claim to have webcam video of you looking on naughty websites in order to collect a ransom, they're now tricking people by using one of the Internet's worst features: pop-up ads.

According to the Better Business Bureau of Minnesota and North Dakota, a newer scam has moved into the area. In this scam, a fake pop-up alert will show up on your browser claiming that "adult content has been detected on your computer", urging you to call an 877 number or else "computer access will be disabled to prevent further damage to our network. Financial data, Facebook logins, and credit card details are being stolen."

That sounds serious...if it were true. But you can breath easily; these pop-ups are 100% BS. And you definitely don't want to call that phone number.

One way to avoid these scam pop-ups is by having up-to-date anti-virus and anti-spyware protection on your computer - even if you aren't regularly visiting websites that would make your grandparents blush.
