La Crescent, MN (KROC-AM News) - A vacation in Iceland ended tragically for a couple from La Crescent.

According to a story in the La Crosse Tribune, family members were informed of the deaths of Janet Veit and Brian Schumacher by the U.S. Embassy in Iceland, where officials indicated the couple drowned during a fishing expedition on Lake Pingvallavatn on Sunday.

The newspaper report says Veit fell into the water Schumacher jumped into the lake to save her. After they were pulled from the cold water, efforts to revive the couple were unsuccessful.

Family members say Veit was employed at a La Crosse Animal Hospital as a veterinarian and Schumacher was a lab technician for the Gunderson Health System.
